The Funndamental Pedal from Funn

Funn recently sent a load of products through for review. In this review, we are going to be taking a close look at the Funndamental Flat MTB Pedal. 

Here is how Funn describe the pedal:

Biking along that uneven mountain trail or rocky flat road will now be a wonderful experience with Funn Fundamental MTB pedals that offer the best of functionality, convenience, and ease of use while also training the rider to use proper weighting and loading/unloading techniques to maintain contact and pressure on the bike, rather than yanking on it and fighting it.

Funn offer quite a few different pedals and there is always a good range of colours to pick from. The Funndamental pedals are no different. They come in 7 different colours. Red, Orange, Blue, Turquoise, Black, Gold and Green. 

There are two types of pin that come with these pedals and these pins fit specific holes on the pedal body. There is a very clear instruction manual that comes with the pedals so this really isn’t hard to get right. Some of the pins even come with split washers so you can adjust how long the pins are for tailoring the grip. 

Another key feature with these pedals is the “Grease Renew System” which enables a very quick, hassle and mess-free service. If you want pedals to last a long time then being able to service them yourself is key.

Specs

The Review

To test these pedals I decided I would fit them to my hardtail which is a carbon fibre Transition Throttle 27.5. The reason I decided to try them on the hardtail is that you really need grippy pedals on a hardtail as there is no rear suspension to soak up the bumps. As a general rule of thumb, I ride clips on the hardtail as I don’t want my feet bouncing off.

Initial thoughts

My initial thoughts on the pedals are that they look great. Even with a bright orange that doesn’t match the colour scheme of my bikes these pedals still look premium. They feel great too with top-quality materials, a high-resolution CNC and nice laser-etched designs and logos. 

Fitting

The pedals come without the pins installed so you need to do this yourself. This isn’t a big job but it’s best to read the instructions provided as there are two types of pins and option split washers for height adjustment. The pedals come with an Allen key and special socket wrench to fit the other pins. 

Once the pins are installed you can apply a tiny bit of grease to the threads and install into the cranks. What is really nice about these pedals is that Funn logo makes it really obvious which pedal goes on which side so no faffing about or risk of stripping the crank threads. 

The pedal uses a large 8mm Allen key to fit them to the crank. I prefer pedals that use larger Allen keys as it makes it much easier to remove the pedals later if they were to get a bit tight or even seize. 

Testing

Riding with these pedals is great. I instantly felt at home on them and never felt like I needed to adjust my foot position as I have done with other pedals. 

Even riding over some really rough stuff with the hardtail I felt my feet glued to the pedal platform. 

I certainly have a love-hate relationship with MTB pedals. I prefer riding flats but often find my feet bouncing off the pedals or I am just uncomfortable as I have my foot in the wrong position. So I switched to clips which solved those issues but made riding less fun. With the Funndamental pedals I no longer have these issues. My feet always feel comfortable and I still have that ability to move my foot around on the pedal to really throw the bike around. 

I have only been out on a dozen rides or so with these pedals so far but have loved every minute of it. I am keen to see how they hold up over the winter months so check back in the future for an update. 

Summary

So in summary, if you are looking for a pedal that offers plenty of grip, customizability and is easy to service all in one package then perhaps the Funn Funndamental Flat MTB Pedals are for you. 

They take a little extra effort to install than some other pedals but it really isn’t a big deal and once they’re set up once they’re good to go.

I will certainly be looking for a set for my own bike but perhaps in black.
